Meet ESANA’s Senior Advisor, Hazem Daoud

Hazem is a PhD candidate in the department of physics at the University of Toronto. His research focus is in the field of quantum optics, in particular ultrafast electron diffraction. Hazem received his BASc degree in Engineering Physics at the University of Toronto in 2014 and a MSc degree in Physics at the University of Toronto in 2015.

Hazem’s journey with Egyptian student associations started in 2016 when he became the social officer for ESA-UofT. For the year 2017/2018 he served as president where he focused on catering to the graduate and undergraduate Egyptian communities on campus. One of the highlight events was inviting Dr. Essam Heggy to give an academic talk followed by a light discussion with Egyptian students.

Hazem joined ESANA as a volunteer in the units officer position and helped organize the General Assembly (GA) meeting in February 2018 where he was officially elected as ESANA’s units officer.

Hazem was elected and served as ESANA president in the period from March 2019 till June 2021. Some of the highlights of that period were: 1) Cementing ESANA’s status as a non-profit organization and revitalizing connections with the Egyptian Educational and Cultural Bureau as well as the Ministry of Emigration. 2) Donating 7 tonnes of books to an Egyptian university. 3) Hosting Dr. Hoda ElMaraghy (recipient of Order of Canada 2020) on International Women’a day. 4) Hosting Dr. Essam Heggy for a technical talk regarding his paper about GERD. 5) Running ESANA scholarships for Egyptian students in the years 2020 and 2021 6) Hosting talks and social events in collaboration with ESANA units such as technical panel discussions, game nights, etc. 7) Revitalizing ESANA’s online presence by renewing the website and expanding ESANA’s social media platforms.

Hazem is truly honored to have served the Egyptian community for several years. He would like to thank the previous teams he worked with who dedicated a lot of time and effort to host a truly diverse multitude of events. Hazem is happy to volunteer as an advisor with the new team and wishes them the best of luck.

We’re excited to have Hazem in the team!
